TiE Walks, a great opportunity for new entrepreneurs

TiE Walks Mentors Lahore
Mentors lineup during the introduction
This Saturday, I got the golden chance to visit TiE walks; a mentoring event held at Royal Palm golf club, organized by The Indus Entrepreneur(TiE) Lahore chapter.
The event was scheduled to start at 3:00 PM but the learners and most of mentors were already there ahead of time, some getting introduced to each other and some already involved in heated discussions.

The Indus Entrepreneur (TiE)

Its a global not for profit organization that focuses on promoting entrepreneurship. TiE has got 60 plus chapters across 18 countries. I've been to events held by Lahore and Islamabad chapters earlier, these chapters are considered very active among the mix.

Important: Do visit TiE Lahore Facebook page to stay informed of upcoming events.

TiE Walks

Humayun Qureshi, CEO of Crescent group gave a brief introduction to TiE and TiE walks. He went through the most common problems he has witnessed with various incubators and centers of entrepreneurship. He hinted that TiE was working to put together legal agreements that would help ensure that mentors don't run away to make their own fortunes using the ideas pitched to them by the newcomers looking for advise.

The Best Thing

The best thing about TiE Walks is, Qureshi said, almost 2.5 mentors are available for each learner. Whereas, 1 mentor is available for 60 or more entrepreneurs in typical events.
This means a wonderful opportunity for the learners since TiE Walks would allow them to sit in an informal setting with mentors and discuss their ideas.

List of mentors I got to see

  • Nahil Mahmood, data scientist and consultant
  • Abdul Azeez, CEO Lumensoft
  • Ali Malik, Shirt & Tie Shop
  • Shakeel Tariq, ValorSoft
  • Tosheeba Sarwar, COO iManagers
  • Haider Razvi, programmer from Microsoft (not a mentor)

Abdul Azeez, CEO of Lumensoft is a beacon of wisdom and knows local industry inside out.

Shakeel Tariq is a senior programmer, returned to Pakistan after spending several years in KSA and running his business ValorSoft in Pakistan

Get over with everyday mundane decisions and save time

I recently read an article explaining the reasons behind Mark Zuckerberg's grey sweat shirt and Steve Job's black turtle-neck/jeans/joggers. These people say that wearing the same thing again and again frees them from making decisions on daily basis. They prefer to focus on more important things instead.
Things like dress shirts, ties, and makeup are necessary for many public facing jobs but it is possible to do away with these things in some cases.
This brings us to Toshiba Sarwar.

Tosheeba Sarwar of iManagers, best example of an austere manager

Miss Tosheeba Sarwar is the chief operating office of iManagers, an event management company. She's spent a large part of her life in the U.S and she speaks at length about how to start your business.
SWAT analysis sounded like her favorite thought.
I asked her "what is the reason of your simple, no fuss outlook?" Her answer confirmed what i was thinking. "If I have to go home after every event and prepare for the next one, more than one hour would be spent in the exercise. I save a couple hours every day by following a simple life style."

Conclusion

I got in touch with many top performers in this event. Several phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and visiting cards were also a part of the bounty.
Steve jobs said in his famous Stanford address "You can't connect the dots looking forward." I am absolutely sure that some time down the road I would look back and the dots would connect, spelling out the word

SUCCESS
